Mt.Rainier
Emmons Glacier

The Emmons Glacier is a nice alternative to the Disappointment Cleaver as a relatively easy way to the summit of Rainier. Camp Shurman (located behind the red "x") can be very crowded during the summer months. Sometimes you have to climb past Shurman to find a place to camp. Usually you will start from the White River Campground.

On one trip it took us a good part of the first day to reach Camp Shurman. We went directly over the top of Steamboat Prow and down the rocks on the back side. We caught this view of Shurman Flats (tents in lower left) while descending the Prow. (Photo by Andrew Nelson.)

This is a shot from high on the Interglacier as we struggled to get to Shurman before dark. We had a large group with people in various levels of condition. A lot of us spent the night on the summit during this trip. (Photo by Andrew Nelson.)

On an earlier trip where we were stormed off, it's Brian Moynihan waiting for the crowd to dissipate before heading up the Emmons.

A view of the Emmons from the west. You will see many people climbing the Interglacier (the snowfield on the far left of the photo) unroped even though people have died from crevasse falls there.
