Getting Started

Mountaineering:
The Freedom of the Hills

(The Mountaineers)
A great book to get you started in mountaineering. Covered topics: Clothing, equipment, ropes, knots, belaying, glacier travel, ice climbing, rescue and much more. This book will give you an idea of what you should know before heading off on a climb.

Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue
by Andy Selters

(The Mountaineers)
A short, concise book that covers various aspects of glacier travel. Especially good is the crevasse rescue section. If you don't know this stuff, you should not be on a glacier.
